What's a Barn-Find Datsun 1600 Roadster Worth, Anyway?

Oppofriends, I need some help. I have the opportunity to bring a mid-1960s Datsun 1600 Roadster into my life, if it’s worth any effort.

Before anyone goes “duh, yes” I want to share some details, and see if some folks with better knowledge than I of old Datsuns can provide insight as to value if sold entirely as-is, in one piece. I don’t have the space or interest to clean this up or part it out.

What I Know:

It’s got chrome trim, apparently some of them had body-color trim

A friend thinks it’s a “low windshield” car

There is a hardtop bolted to it, but the back window needs replacing

No idea if a soft top is installed, and if so, I suspect it’s trashed

Engine is there, but disassembled

Transmission is MIA

Trunk lid has some rust bubbling up. Not sure how the floors and rockers look. It’s currently sunk into the ground a bit.

Is it worth a few grand in this condition? I have to think someone would at least want it for whatever body panels and parts can be saved.

i t’s not a barn find if there’s no barn to be found.

honestly, the 1600 roadster is a pretty sweet ride but given that it’s a) got some unknown amount of engine components that sums to less than one full working unit, b) zero transmission, and c) it’s been buried up to the floor panels in pine needles (which are acidic) for an unknown number of years, that’s going to be a lotta work to get anything usable out of it.

Anything touching the ground is probably rotten. Given that you can buy a very nice model for around 10k, I would think you could maybe get 1k for it as a parts car.

Yeah, that’s about my thought too. It’s going to take some work to extract and I really fear the underside of it being trashed.

On a car that’s been sitting in a field (bamboo forest?) I’d say you need to assume that pretty much anything you can’t see directly is ruined unless proven otherwise. So I wouldn’t expect it to be more than a parts car, especially with the disassembled engine, unless proven otherwise. I’d certainly want to get it out of the ground and see the underside before spending much more than scrap value on it.

That’s a parts car...maybe worth $1000. I assume hard tops for these are hard to find so that probably worth a good amount.

Any basket case with non running engine = 1000$ max. Based purely on risk.

Anyone who asks/pays otherwise is nuts.

They're lovely cars. The bottom half of the one pictured is rusted past the point that David Tracy would find acceptable. It's worth about $8 minus what it will cost to have it hauled off after it breaks you.
